GRC and DCV to Launch Next-Gen Immersion-Cooled Data Centers in the Middle East

Collaboration between leading containerized data center, IT technology, and immersion cooling system developers will accelerate deployment of high-efficiency, single phase liquid immersion cooled, containerized data center solutions in the region.

Dubai, UAE – October 17, 2023 – GRC (Green Revolution Cooling), DCV Industries, and Dell Technologies announced today a collaboration to deliver cutting-edge, immersion-cooled, modular data centers to the Middle East Region.

By combining GRC’s leading patented single-phase immersion cooling, DCV’s robust containerized data center enclosures and Dell’s high-density server technologies, the relationship aims to offer organizations in the region a comprehensive solution to significantly reduce data center build, maintenance, and power costs when compared to traditional air-cooled facilities.

Conventional data center cooling consumes an enormous amount of electricity, and can account for up to 40% of data center energy usage overall.[1] This power consumption also drives the poor power usage effectiveness ratings of conventional data centers: an average air cooled data center has a PUE of 1.8.[2] By eliminating the need for power-hungry chillers and air conditioning to cool IT equipment, immersion cooling enables operators can achieve a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of <1.03,[3] dramatically reducing data center energy consumption when compared to air cooling. As a result, by replacing air chilling infrastructure with high-efficiency immersion cooling, data center operators can reduce their total power consumption along with an associated reduction in carbon emissions. In addition, as it addresses the cooling requirements of the entire server rather than just the CPUs or GPUs and reduces overall power consumption by eliminating server fans, immersion cooling is even more energy efficient than cold plate or direct-to-chip methods.

The integrated solution is purpose-built for the harsh and demanding Middle East environment and is ideal for sustainability-focused organizations.  “Because the IT equipment is submerged in a protective dielectric fluid, immersion cooling provides unique protection against environmental contaminants, static, dust, and condensation, making it especially well-suited for use in containerized data center solutions,” said Paul Edmondson, EMEA Vice President of GRC. “Plus, with rising server energy consumption, power costs, sustainability policies, and regulatory scrutiny, immersion cooling is positioned to be the primary technology enabling sustainability for all data centers today and into the future.”

“Nowadays, with the tremendous influx of data, it is critical to be business-ready faster, turning insights into actions and driving speedy outcomes, yet remaining sustainable and cost efficient. In this environment, to save resources and costs, businesses must act by implementing efficiencies to reduce overall energy use. Our collaboration with GRC and DCV helps customers to significantly increase the capacity of their datacenters using the latest sustainable cooling technology.” said Walid Yehia, managing director, UAE at Dell Technologies

Demand for eco-friendly data centers in the Gulf region is expected to boom with rapid digital transformation. The collaboration aims to accelerate deployment of immersion-cooled facilities that favour green, resilient solutions that reduce environmental impact. “Our innovative containerized infrastructure design provides a resilient plug-and-play data center option for harsh Gulf environments while meeting sustainability goals,” noted Mohamad Abou Zaki, CEO, DCV Industries.

Lonestar6 is highly efficient and handles GPU-heavy compute loads including HPC, AI, and AR/VR applications; operates at a power density of 70 kilowatts per rack, and is capable of performing at 3 petaFLOPS per second. The heat associated with the significant energy consumption, combined with the triple-digit weather that is common in the region, requires liquid immersion cooling—air cooling is unable to handle this kind of compute load.

This case study outlines the challenges TACC faced in cooling this supercomputer within their existing space and power envelope, and how single-phase liquid immersion cooling proved to deliver a reliable, safe, and environmentally-friendly solution, along with reduced CapEx and OpEx—all with only minimal changes to existing infrastructure.

“GRC’s immersion cooling solution has given us the ability to use the densest servers and hottest chips,” said Tommy Minyard, TACC’s Director of Advanced Computing Systems. “These chassis have 280 W CPUs that run so hot they cannot be cooled by air.”

In addition to the long-term partnership of GRC and TACC (since 2009), the decision to cool Lonestar6 using ICEraQ was based on the solution’s sheer cooling power and GRC’s vast data center ecosystem. Using GRC’s ICEraQ to cool TACC’s servers, the system is delivering a PUE nearing ~1.1, while reducing the facility’s carbon footprint up to 40%.

“We are excited our longstanding partnership with TACC ensures the researchers and scientists using the Lonestar6 supercomputer have access to the resources necessary to remain at the forefront of scientific research,” says Peter Poulin, CEO of GRC. “GRC’s ICEraQ Series 10 liquid immersion cooling solution enables TACC to reliably and safely cool their supercomputer, while advancing science.”

New GRC eBook Explains the Value of Single-Phase Immersion Cooling for Bringing Data Centers into the Future

GRC Releases the Definitive Guide on Comparing Cooling Solutions and Choosing the
Best Solution for Data Center Operations

AUSTIN, TX – May 9, 2023 GRC (Green Revolution Cooling), the leader in immersion cooling for data centers released an ebook comparing cooling technologies titled: “Comparing Data Center Cooling Technologies—Which Is Best for Your Operation?”. The report compares cooling solutions and describes how, with its simple design, location flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and reliability, single-phase liquid immersion cooling is the best choice for data centers.

The ebook outlines several critical performance categories and compares air cooling, single-phase immersion cooling, two-phase immersion cooling, cold plate cooling, and rear door heat exchanger (RDHx) systems. Looking at complexity and upfront costs, efficiency and operating expenses, cooling capacity and high-density performance, reliability and location flexibility, and sustainability, single-phase liquid immersion cooling comes out ahead of all other data center cooling technologies.

In a typical data center, 33% of costs go to cool the heat generated by the servers. Single-phase immersion cooling delivers a 90% reduction in cooling energy over air cooling and is 80% more energy efficient than cold plate methods. As a result, operators who switch to immersion cooling can realize a PUE of <1.03, cutting total data center energy usage 35-50%.

CPUs and GPUs are getting hotter each year and show no signs of slowing down. Data centers are challenged to effectively cool these heat-producing processors and, at the same time, reduce energy use. Single-phase immersion cooling delivers on both fronts, while also protecting sensitive ITE from potentially harmful airborne contaminants.

“This ebook outlines the specific differences in performance and energy use of the most common cooling technologies and single-phase liquid immersion cooling wins in every direct comparison,” said Peter Poulin, CEO at GRC. “We are thrilled that this ebook will show operators what we at GRC already know—that single phase immersion cooling lowers costs, increases energy efficiency, and delivers the data center of tomorrow today.”
